The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges represents the global academic veterinary medical community. The members of the AAVMC promote and protect the health and wellbeing of people, animals, and the environment by advancing the veterinary medical profession and preparing new generations of veterinarians to meet the evolving needs of a changing world. CIVME Grant Program

The Council on International Veterinary Medical Education (CIVME) is an initiative of the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), which is keen to promote and share best practices in veterinary medical education around the world.

The council's grant program will provide a means for:

  • Communication and collaboration that advances veterinary medical education around the world
  • Collaboration among educational researchers
  • Dissemination of innovations and other educational advances, to magnify the impact of projects by outreach to educators and their respective organizations

The CIVME Grant Program includes: 

The CIVME Research Grant, which has two categories (Educational Research Projects and Educational Exchange Projects).

The project budgets for all grants should not exceed $10,000 and are limited for a period of max. 24 months. Due to the size of the CIVME grants, indirect project costs are not considered. Preference will be given to applications that are collaborative efforts between institutions and across regions

Annual AAVMC Awards Program

AAVMC grants various awards to inspire and recognize professional excellence in academic veterinary medicine. Awardees will be notified in December 2025. Each awardee will be featured in a 3-minute tribute video during the Annual Conference in April 2026. For more details on the AAVMC Awards Program, please click here.

AAVMC Excellence in Research Award

In 2011, the Board of Directors established the AAVMC Excellence in Research Award to recognize outstanding research and scholarly achievements in the field of veterinary medicine. The award honors those who demonstrate excellence in original research, leadership in the scientific community, and exceptional mentoring of trainees and colleagues in any discipline of veterinary medicine.

AAVMC Distinguished Veterinary Educator Awards, Presented by Zoetis

The AAVMC Distinguished Veterinary Educator Awards honor excellence in veterinary medical education through two national recognitions: the Career Achievement Award and the Emerging Leader Award. Open to educators at AAVMC member institutions, each school may nominate one individual for one of the two awards each year. The Career Achievement Award celebrates exemplary leadership and lasting impact in veterinary education, recognizing individuals whose educational accomplishments, innovations, scholarship, and service have influenced the profession beyond their own institution. The Emerging Leader Award honors talented educators with at least five years of teaching experience who have significantly contributed to their institution’s educational mission and show strong potential for expanded leadership and influence in the field. Eligibility is limited to educators at AAVMC college or school member institutions. In any given year, each AAVMC member institution may make a nomination for only one of the two awards.

AAVMC Iverson Bell Award

The Iverson Bell Award is presented annually in memory and recognition of Dr. Iverson Bell’s outstanding leadership and contributions in the promotion of diversity in veterinary medical education.

AAVMC Billy E. Hooper Award for Distinguished Service

The Billy E. Hooper Award for Distinguished Service is an annual honor established in January 1990 by the Board of Directors to recognize an individual whose leadership and vision has made a significant contribution to academic veterinary medicine and the veterinary profession.

The Zoetis Foundation/AAVMC Veterinary Student Scholarship

The Zoetis Foundation/AAVMC Veterinary Student Scholarship was developed to offset educational expenses related to attaining a veterinary education. The program focuses on addressing the issue of student debt which may greatly impact the future of the veterinary profession. More than 200 scholarships worth $7,000 will be awarded to students at US & Carriben AAVMC member institutions. These scholarships will be paid directly to the insitution and applied to the students 2026 Fall Semster account. The program provides equal opportunity for applicants, regardless of location, by using total student enrollment at each veterinary school as a means of determining the available number of scholarships per school.

Merck Animal Health Diversity Leadership Scholarship

The Merck Diversity Leadership Scholarship will recognize veterinary students who have demonstrated a record of contributing to enhancing diversity and inclusion through course projects, co-curricular activities, outreach, domestic and community engagement, research, and/or developed an early reputation for influencing others to be inclusive. These scholarships will honor the individuals who have been consistent champions of addressing inequities and underrepresentation in the veterinary profession; have advocated for social justice; and, who have advanced valuing diversity and inclusion at US AAVMC Member Institutions. Up to 16 scholarships will be awarded; each scholarship will be awarded a one-time payment in the amount of $10,000 paid directly to the institution and applied to the student's Fall 2026 semester.

Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship

The Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship also recognizes veterinary students who have demonstrated exemplary promise as future leaders and have made significant contributions to enhancing diversity and inclusion in academic veterinary medicine. The awardee of the Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship will only be selected from the Merck Animal Health Diversity Scholarship nominations pool. Each scholarship will be awarded a one-time payment in the amount of $6,000 paid directly to the institution and applied to the students Fall 2026 semester. Please ensure thave you have been nominated by your insitution before you proceed with the application.

Chewy Veterinary Leaders Program

The Chewy Veterinary Leaders Program recognizes third-year veterinary students from underserved groups who have shown an interest in and affinity for growing leadership capabilities. Individuals selected for the program will receive financial assistance as well as resources to support them through their final years of veterinary school and into the next phase of their careers.15 students will be selected for the 2025 Chewy Veterinary Leaders cohort and awarded a $20,000 scholarship distributed to the students Fall 2026 semester. Each US AAVMC Institutional Member may nominate one (1) eligible student for the Chewy Veterinary Leaders Program. Please ensure thave you have been nominated by your insitution before you proceed with the application.

Zoetis Foundation/AAVMC Veterinary Research Scholarship

Two $25,000 scholarships will be awarded to veterinary students who are pursuing an advanced degree in basic or veterinary clinical research fields of study. The scholarship will apply to the student's Fall 2026 semester.

Click on the "Register" link and complete and submit the registration form.

2. Login

Login to the award with your email and password.

3. Create

Create your online application.

4. Save

During the Call for Applications period, your application can be saved as DRAFT until all the required information is completed and attachments uploaded. As each section is complete, you will see a appear in the category tab when the application is saved. At any time, you can download and print your application by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section.

5. Submit

On completion, save your Nomination as FINAL. Download and print a copy of your application for your records by clicking on the icon in the Application Summary section in the right column. Note: If an update is required prior to the Call for Applications period, you can make the update and resave as FINAL.
